Battery  Park

Discover Battery Park - all over again, or for the first time! This newly reborn part of the city has a rich and fascinating history. A popular promenade since as early as the 17th century, this area of town has been among other things, a defensive stronghold, home to the elite, a centre for theatre and opera, and the world's first immigration depot 40 years before Ellis Island opened its doors.

Like many of the neighbourhoods in NYC, this area has had many roles - and until recently, one could have easily and happily avoided this forgotten part of town. Not anymore!

The last decade has seen a major transformation of Battery Park, with the construction of many luxury high-rises, the refurbishment of the historic park as well as its monuments and the construction of the beautiful Hudson River Esplanade with gardens, walkways and bike paths that run the entire length of Battery Park City from north to south. This renaissance has brought with it many businesses, shops and fine restaurants all catering to the needs of this very chic and tasteful neighborhood.

Celebrity chefs have seen the light and started opening their foodie havens in the neighborhood - as well as in the bordering neighborhood of Tribeca, and have successfully created a new and exciting hot spot for nightlife . The options are many - try Les Halles Downtown, the popular French bistro owned by celeb chef Anthony Bourdain of the Travel Channel, or take a walk on the esplanade and head over to Nobu - the modern Japanese sensation opened by the world famous chef Nobu Matsuhisa and "Iron Chef" Masaharu Marimoto, not to mention Robert Deniro!

Speaking of Deniro, he's a major force behind the rebirth of the area; not only has he invested in a number of local businesses and eateries, since the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 he's made it his life's mission to both honour the Big Apple as a major filmmaking centre, and to contribute to the long-term recovery of lower Manhattan and New York City. Every spring Deniro's Tribeca Film Festival, attended by movie stars and movie goers alike, celebrates the spirit of the city and of the artists who are showcased. Tickets are available to all, who knows who you might see!

Just steps from Wall Street and the World Financial Center, this neighborhood is convenient to every part of the city - there are 10 different subway lines all within a 5 block walk, and it's only a 10 minute ride to Union Square, and just 6 subway stops away from Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, and midtown Manhattan.
